            For an ordinary street address, street, house number and town are enough. For anything without a clear address, such as gate 3, a hiking car park or a festival field, use the coordinates.

        Where the code shows the way
      

    


    

        

          

            Delivery entrance and gate
          

          

            On the delivery note, the order confirmation or at the main entrance. The code takes drivers straight to the loading ramp instead of to reception on the other side of the site.
          

        

        

          

            Building site
          

          

            New housing estates often have no house numbers yet. With coordinates, tradespeople and suppliers find the right plot even when the street is still missing from the satnav.
          

        

        

          

            Invitation
          

          

            Wedding, birthday, club party: a code on the card that leads to the venue. Or to the car park, if that is the genuinely tricky part.
          

        

        

          

            Holiday flat
          

          

            In the booking confirmation or the welcome folder: the way to the house, to the parking space or to the nearest bakery.
          

        

        

          

            Outdoor meeting point
          

          

            Hiking car park, the start of a run, the assembly point for a guided tour. Places without an address are exactly the ones where people get lost.
          

        

        

          

            Moves and branches

        What the code contains
      

      

        Address or coordinates
      

      

        The code follows the geo format, which iPhone and Android pass on to the maps app. It contains either a point on the earth or a search query:
      

    


    

      

          

            
Address

            
Without coordinates, the code passes the address on as a search, as if it had been typed into the maps app. With coordinates, it serves as the name of the point.

          

          

            
Latitude

            
The north–south position in decimal degrees, such as 48.6772. In Germany it lies roughly between 47 and 55. Comma or full stop as the separator — the generator understands both.

          

          

            
Longitude

            
The east–west position in decimal degrees, such as 9.5883. In Germany roughly between 6 and 15.

          

          

            
Precision

            
Four decimal places are accurate to about ten metres, five to about one metre. More rarely makes sense — the phone cannot locate itself any more precisely either.

          

      


      

        Every maps app shows coordinates. In Google Maps, press and hold the point, and they appear at the top in the search field. In Apple Maps, press and hold the point and drag the info card up. On openstreetmap.org, right-click and choose “Show address”.

            Coordinates for anything without a house number
          

          

            Loading ramp, gate, car park, meadow: here the address search finds the building at best, and at worst a place of the same name in another federal state. With coordinates there is no mix-up.
          

        

        

          

            Add a label
          

          

            Enter a label in addition to the coordinates, such as “Delivery entrance gate 3”. Many maps apps show it at the point, and whoever scans can see at once that it is the right one.
          

        

        

          

            Check it yourself once
          

          

            Scan the code and have the route displayed. Is the point on the right side of the street, at the right gate? Swapped values stand out immediately: the point is then no longer in Europe.
          

        

        

          

            Use a link for directions
          

          

            A location code shows one point. If you need directions with several entrances and notes on parking, put them on a web page and use a link code for it.

    The one the phone has set for it. On the iPhone that is Apple Maps, on Android usually Google Maps. If you have set up a different app as the default, you get that one or a choice.
  





  
    Do I need coordinates, or is the address enough?
    
      
    
  
  

    For an ordinary address with street, house number and town it is enough. The maps app searches for it as if it had been typed in. You need coordinates when there is no clear address or when a particular entrance matters.

    As precise as the coordinates. With five decimal places it is accurate to about one metre. How precisely the phone then guides you there depends on its reception, usually to within a few metres.
  





  
    Can I use a Google Maps link instead?
    
      
    
  
  

    Yes, as a link code. The difference: on the iPhone, a Google Maps link opens the browser, or the Google Maps app if it is installed. A location code opens the maps app set up on the device. The link is worth it if you want to show a listing with photos and opening hours.
  





  
    Does the code work without internet?
    
      
    
  
  

    Opening it does, because the coordinates are in the code itself. Whether the map shows anything depends on whether the maps app has already loaded that area. A plain address, on the other hand, needs a connection for the search.
  





  
    Can I use it for places outside Germany?
    
      
    
  
  

    Yes, the format applies worldwide. Latitudes south of the equator and longitudes west of Greenwich get a minus sign. Sydney Opera House, for example, lies at -33.8568 and 151.2153.

    No. The code is created in your browser, and the address and coordinates go to no server — not even ours. The page does not even ask for your own location.
