Copy the address from the address bar. Check first that the page works without logging in and on a phone — that is where it will be opened.

SVG for the print shop, signs and menus, PNG for presentations, newsletters and social media. How big the code needs to be depends on the reading distance.

Scan it once and actually open the page, rather than just letting the phone recognise it. Then print a proof at full size and scan it from the real distance.

What a link code is good for
Reviews
Ask for a review without anyone having to search first: on the invoice, at the counter, on the business card. Most platforms offer the direct link to the review form in the business profile.
Appointment booking
On the practice’s appointment card, in the hair salon’s window, under the special offer. The way to the online calendar, without typing out an address.
Instructions and manuals
On the device, on the packaging, in the box. One scan and the manual is there when it is needed — not after a search through the cellar.
Product information
Data sheet, care instructions, allergens, origin. Whatever does not fit on the label is one web page away.
Sign-ups and surveys
Joining the club, signing up for the summer party, feedback after the event. The notice on the noticeboard becomes a form.
What the code contains
The address, nothing else
A link code holds the web address as text. The phone tells from its beginning what to do and opens the browser. These are the parts that matter:
- https://
- The scheme at the start. Without it, some scanners take the address for ordinary text and merely display it. The generator adds it.
- Domain
- For example example.com. It appears in the preview before the phone opens the page, so whoever scans can see where it leads.
- Path
- Everything after the first single slash, such as /menu. Short and meaningful beats long and cryptic.
- Parameters
- Everything from the question mark on, such as ?utm_source=flyer. Parameters make the code denser. If you need them, put them behind a redirect on your own domain.
The code points to the address, not to the content. If the page changes under the same address, the code shows what is new. If the address itself changes, you need a new code or a redirect from the old address to the new one.

What matters
Short beats long
Every character makes the pattern finer. example.com/menu scans from further away than an address with a hundred characters of campaign parameters. If you have to print the code small, a short address gains you the most.
Your own domain, not someone else’s short links
Link shorteners and dynamic codes put someone else’s server in between. If that service shuts down, your code is dead. A short address on your own domain stays in your hands, and the preview shows that people really do land on your site.
Build the landing page for phones
Whoever scans has a phone in their hand. A ten-page PDF, a login screen or a banner covering half the page wastes the scan. On the small screen, the page should show straight away what people came for.
The address, readable, next to it
Not everyone likes scanning, and some people cannot. The address in legible type under the code helps them — and helps everyone else check: if it matches the preview, nobody has stuck another code over it.

The code contains the old address and keeps leading there. Set up a redirect from the old address to the new one, and every printed code keeps working. Without a redirect you need a new code.
Can I see how often the code has been scanned?
Not through the code itself, because a static code reports nothing to anybody. Your own web analytics does see the visits to the landing page, though. Use an address of its own for this, such as example.com/flyer, that is not linked anywhere else. Then you know those visits come from the code.
Can I link to a PDF file?
Yes, any address that opens in a browser works. Bear in mind, though, that PDFs are tedious to read on a phone and, depending on the device, have to be downloaded first. For a menu, a web page is usually more pleasant.
Do I have to put www. in front?
Only if your site cannot be reached without www. Try opening the address without www in the browser. If you land on your site, use the shorter form — it makes the code a little coarser.
Why does my code look so dense?
Because the address is long. Frequently there are parameters after the question mark, from newsletter or advertising systems for instance, or long paths from online shops. The address often works without everything from the question mark on. Just try it in the browser.
Can I link to WhatsApp or Instagram?
Yes. Profiles on social networks have an ordinary web address, such as instagram.com/yourname. For WhatsApp there is wa.me followed by the number with the country code, without a plus sign, leading zero or spaces, for example wa.me/491711234567. The phone then opens the matching app.
Is my web address transmitted or stored?
No. The code is created in your browser, and the address goes to no server — not even ours. Whoever scans the code later lands directly on your site. We learn nothing about it.
