Create a WhatsApp QR code

Whoever scans the code lands straight in a chat with you, without saving your number first. If you like, a message is already waiting in the text field, such as “I’d like to book an appointment”. Works for a group’s invite link too. Free, no sign-up, and you can copy the finished link.

Your WhatsApp code

Enter your number with the country code, and a message only if you want to suggest one. The preview shows the code as you type.

Whoever scans it lands in a WhatsApp chat with you, with a pre-filled message if you like. You can copy the finished link.

With the country code, e.g. +44 7700 900123. For a group, paste the invite link.

Already in the text field when someone scans. Nothing is sent until they tap Send.

Preview

Enter your number with the country code — the code appears once it is complete.

Use SVG, PDF or EPS for print. These vector files stay sharp at any size.

Logo, frame and colours

PNG, JPG, SVG or WebP, up to 2 MB. The file stays on your device, it is not uploaded.

Higher levels survive scratches and logos but make the pattern denser.

The light border is part of the code. Below 4 modules you are asking for trouble.

How it works

Three steps to your WhatsApp code

  1. Enter your number with the country code

The number you use WhatsApp with, with the country code instead of the leading 0: 07700 900123 in the UK becomes +44 7700 900123. For a group, paste its invite link instead.

  2. Suggest a message or leave it open

A pre-filled message saves the other person thinking and saves you asking: “I’m interested in the flat on Linden Street”. Nothing is sent until they tap Send, and they can change the text first.

  3. Test, then print

On a computer, “Test link” opens WhatsApp with your chat. Before printing, scan the code once with your phone: if the right name is at the top of the chat and the message is in the field, everything is fine.

Uses

Where the WhatsApp code helps

Shop, practice and workshop

In the shop window, on the counter or the job ticket: “Ask us on WhatsApp”. With a pre-filled message like “Is my car ready?” you know straight away what it is about.

Business card and flyer

Next to your phone number, a code for everyone who would rather write than call. The code doesn’t replace the number, it just saves typing it in.

Selling and letting

On the notice for the bike, in the estate agent’s window, on the sign outside the holiday flat. The pre-filled message names the offer, so with three listings at once you know which one is meant.

Groups for clubs and classes

The group’s invite link as a code on the letter to parents, on the notice board in the clubhouse or on the slide at the information evening. Whoever scans it sees the group and joins.

Events and courses

On the summer fete poster or the door of the course room: questions about signing up come by WhatsApp instead of on scraps of paper. For news to many people a channel suits better, and its link works here too.

Website and screen

On screen, for scanning with a phone when someone is at a computer. On the website itself, use the link: copy it below the code, because on a phone people would rather tap a link than scan it.

What’s in the code

A link the way WhatsApp specifies it

The code contains a link in the form wa.me/number, as WhatsApp provides for “click to chat”. No account, no contact list, no access to your chats. The link has up to three parts:

wa.me
WhatsApp’s own short address for chat links. The phone recognises it and opens WhatsApp; on a computer, WhatsApp Web or the desktop app opens.
Your number
Digits only, with the country code and without the leading 0, so 447700900123. Write it however you like, with spaces, + or 00: the generator turns it into the form WhatsApp requires.
Pre-filled message
Optional. It follows ?text= in the link, with spaces and special characters encoded. So each word makes the code a little denser: one short sentence is enough.
Group or channel
Instead of a number, an invite link (chat.whatsapp.com/…) or a channel link (whatsapp.com/channel/…) works too. WhatsApp can’t pre-fill a message there.

Your number is in the code, and whoever scans it sees it in the chat. A printed code is as public as a printed number. For a notice in the stairwell, a business or second number is a better fit than your private one.

In practice

What matters before printing

Group links can be reset

The invite link is in the group info under “Invite via link”. If an admin resets it there, the printed code leads nowhere. Once the code is out, leave the link alone. If you want to check new members, turn on “Approve new members”.

WhatsApp Business for companies

For companies there is the free WhatsApp Business app, with a business profile, opening hours and an automatic away message. The code from here works the same with both apps. Whether WhatsApp belongs in your privacy policy is something to settle with whoever looks after it.

Short message, big enough code

Every space appears in the link as %20, every é as %C3%A9. A 60-character sentence already makes the code noticeably denser than the number alone. It should never be smaller than 2 cm across, in a shop window more like 5 cm.

Say what happens

Without a hint, nobody knows whether a code leads to the menu or into a chat. A frame saying “Chat with us on WhatsApp” tells them. The text is already filled in as soon as you pick a frame under “Logo, frame and colours”.

Good to know

Questions about the WhatsApp QR code

Rather be saved as a contact?

The vCard code creates a contact with name, phone and email. Anyone who wants to message you later will then find you in WhatsApp too.

To the vCard code
Do I have to save the number to send a message?

No. That is exactly what the link is for: the chat opens without the number being in the address book. It can still be saved afterwards.

Is the message sent automatically?

No. The pre-filled message only sits in the text field. It is sent when the other person taps Send, and they can change or delete it before that.

How do I make a QR code for a WhatsApp group?

As an admin, tap the group name at the top, then “Invite via link”, and copy the link. Paste it here instead of a number. WhatsApp shows its own code there too, but here you get it as a PDF or SVG for printing, with frame and logo.

How is this different from the QR code in the WhatsApp app?

The code in WhatsApp’s settings adds you as a contact and is only available there. The code from here opens the chat directly, can suggest a message and prints at any size. Both work side by side.

Does the WhatsApp code expire?

No. The code is static and doesn’t go through our server. It works for as long as your number is on WhatsApp. A group code works until someone resets the invite link.

Does qrmacher.de store my number?

No. The code and the link are created in your browser; number and message are not transmitted. We only count that a WhatsApp code was created, not for which number.

Is qrmacher.de a WhatsApp service?

No. WhatsApp is a trademark of WhatsApp LLC, which belongs to Meta. qrmacher.de is an independent QR code generator and does not work with WhatsApp or Meta. The code only uses the public link format WhatsApp describes for “click to chat”.
